We are a small, friendly pre-school, based at Clyst Hydon Village Hall, catering for the village and surrounding area. We welcome children from the term before they are 3 to 5 years of age.
Who are we?
Puddleduck Pre-School is a community based pre-school in the premises of Clyst Hydon Village Hall, catering for children from the term before they are 3, to 5 years of age.
The pre-school is well staffed; with a qualified play leader and assistants. It is managed by a parent-run committee.
Puddleducks is regularly assessed and inspected by Ofsted. We were recently rated as ‘Outstanding’ and ‘Good’ on all Ofsted Early Years Outcomes. Puddleducks is a member of the Pre-School Learning Alliance.
We enjoy a close relationship with Clyst Hydon Primary School and have a weekly play/story-time visit for all children and parents.
What do we do?
We offer children the opportunity to grow, develop and learn in a safe and welcoming environment. Our first priority is to ensure that your child feels happy, confident and settled within the group. Each child is an individual and it is of vital importance that they are treated as one. We understand that each child develops at different stages and that they need to learn at their own individual level.
As your child settles within the group, we create a tailored plan for them, guided by the National Frameworks:
Birth to Three Matters (for the under 3s). This aims for your child to become:
- A Strong Child
- A Skilful Communicator
- A Competent Learner
- A Healthy Child
The Foundation Stage Curriculum (aged 3 and over). This focuses on developing the six areas of learning:
- Mathematical Development
- Physical Development
- Personal, Social and Emotional Development
- Communication, Language and Literacy
- Creative Development
- Knowledge and Understanding of the World
We plan activities around these areas of learning, ensuring that the children are enjoying themselves and learning at the same time. As they develop, the children begin to recognise numbers, colours, shapes and letter sounds.
Puddleducks has lots of toys and equipment and plenty of time for free play, both indoors and outdoors. Our activities include music, drama, arts and crafts, storytelling, written activities, physical education, cooking, free play, school visits and outings.
How much will it cost?
Our current fees are £5.50 per session (a session is either a morning or afternoon) with a £1.75 charge for supervision during the lunch hour. Therefore a full day costs £12.75.
Funding is available for all children from the term after they are 3 and entitles the child to 5 funded sessions a week.
Opening times
Current sessions are:
- Tuesday - 9.00 am to 3.30pm*
- Wednesday - 9.00 am to 3.00 pm
- Friday - 9.00 am to 3.00 pm
*On Tuesday at 2.45pm, we visit Clyst Hydon Primary School for play and story-time. Under 3s, for whom this trip is optional, are accompanied by their parent/guardian.
Sessions are open to all children. On Friday morning we do a school starter session for those who are due to start school and on Friday afternoon we have PE.

CHUFS Toddler Group
Our toddler group, CHUFS (Clyst Hydon Under Fives) runs on Thursday mornings, 10am to 12 noon. It is a friendly and informal group with outside and indoor play, singing and refreshments.
